The Midland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a one car crash that claimed the life of a 30 year old Isabella County man and his unidentified passenger. The crash occurred at approximately 8:45 pm on July 28, 2015 in Midland County's Lee Township at the dead end of South 9 Mile, approximately 1/2 mile north of Stewart Rd.
Evidence at the scene indicates that the driver was northbound in a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer on South 9 Mile north of Stewart Rd. The driver failed to stop at the end of the road, drove over a street sign, through some heavy brush and landed upside down in the Chippewa River in approximately 2 1/2, feet of water. Both the driver and the passenger were pronounced deceased at the scene by Chief Medical Examiner J. Daniel Cline.
This incident remains under investigation. Names will be released once the passenger is identified and notification of the family is made. While speed appears to be a factor in this crash, we are awaiting toxicology reports to determine if the use of drugs or alcohol were involved.
The Midland County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Lee and Homer Township Fire Departments, Mid Michigan Health EMS, and a Conservation Officer from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
