MEDIA RELEASE - 31 Year Old Cold Case

Date: January 4, 2023  MEDIA RELEASE

The family of Gregory McRoberts, along with the Midland County Sheriff’s Office, is asking the driver involved in a 31 year old unsolved fatal hit & run crash to come forward.

The victim, Gregory McRoberts, was last seen on the evening of December 12, 1991 when he left his residence on his bicycle to return to his disabled vehicle parked at the Silver Creek Inn on South Meridian Rd.  Greg never returned home and was reported missing on December 16, 1991.  Sadly, Greg’s body and bicycle were located January 4, 1992 in a deep ditch along S. Meridian Rd.  Greg’s injuries, damage to the bicycle, and vehicle parts located at the scene, were consistent with him being struck by a vehicle.

After several years of the initial investigation, the case went cold.  In 2005, Greg’s parents were sent an anonymous letter by someone claiming to be the driver of the vehicle that hit and killed Greg (see attached).  The letter writer expresses remorse to the family and explains how they have not been able to live free or in peace because they too have had to live with the pain and guilt of their actions that night.  The writer also advises that they have discussed the incident with an attorney and indicates they discussed it with a friend.  They also claim to have found a personal relationship with God, that Jesus died for their sins, and asks forgiveness from the family.

Enough time has passed, it is time to be set free of this burden and “confess your sins one to another…so that you may be healed.” (James 5:16).

Today marks the 31st anniversary of this incident and Greg’s son and daughter, sister and mother, would like the person involved to come forward and have their questions answered and are willing to offer forgiveness so that they all can finally have the healing and closure needed to move forward.

Anyone with additional information on this case or any unsolved case are asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at (989) 839-4609 to set up an appointment to speak to someone.
