NEWS RELEASE - December 20, 2019
The Midland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash involving two vehicles that claimed the life of a 20 year old Gladwin County man. The incident took place on West Barden Road near Bush Road in Geneva Township at approximately 8:03 am on December 19, 2019.
Our investigation indicates that the driver, Evan Shaffer, age 20, was driving his white 2008 Chevy Impala and was heading eastbound on West Barden Road. The Chevy Impala crossed the centerline and side swiped a westbound blue 2011 Ford Edge that was driven by Larry Cave, age 57, from Coleman. After the collision, both vehicles left the road to the north and entered a field where the Chevy Impala overturned.
Mr. Shaffer was pronounced deceased at the scene. Mr. Cave was evaluated at the scene by medical personnel and released.
Mr. Shaffer was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Mr. Cave was wearing his seat belt. Both vehicles’ air bags deployed.
While there is no evidence to indicate that alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in this crash, we are waiting for toxicology reports for a final determination. This report will be forwarded to the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office for review once it has been completed.
The Midland County Sheriff’s Office were assisted at the scene by Mid-Michigan Medical Center EMS, Coleman Fire Rescue and Midland County Medical Chief Examiner, Dr. J. Daniel Cline.
