The Midland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a two vehicle fatal traffic crash that claimed the life of a 59 year old Rhodes, MI man. The incident took place on East Shearer Road near North Sturgeon Road in Mills Township at approximately 4:32 pm on December 3, 2019.

Our investigation indicates that the driver, Robert Witzke, age 59 from Rhodes, was driving his silver 2012 Chevy Silverado pick up, eastbound on East Shearer Road. Mr. Witkze was attempting to pass a eastbound black 2015 GMC Sierra pick up that was being driven by Michael May, age 39, from Midland.

Mr. May’s vehicle had slowed and started to turn left (north) into a driveway when the two vehicles clipped each other. Mr. Witzke’s vehicle then lost control and went off the road to the right and struck a tree.

Mr. Witzke was transported to MidMichigan Medical Center where he later passed away. Mr. May and his 14 year old passenger were not injured in the crash.

Mr. Witzke’s seat belt use is unknown at this time. His vehicle’s airbag did deploy.

Mr. May and his passenger were wearing their seat belts. Their airbag did not deploy.

Alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in this crash. We are waiting for toxicology reports for a final determination. This report will be forwarded to the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office for review once it has been completed.

The Midland County Sheriff’s Office were assisted at the scene by Mills Township Fire Rescue and MidMichigan EMS.

The crash remains under investigation.
