Media Release – December 12, 2017
The Midland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a two vehicle, fatal traffic crash that claimed the life of a 25 year old Midland woman. The incident took place on South Eight Mile Road just north of West Prairie Road in Lee Township at approximately 5:45 pm on December 11, 2017.
Our initial investigation indicates that Kristen Laughton, age 25 from Midland, was driving her black 1999 Toyota Camry and was heading northbound on South Eight Mile Road. She lost control of her vehicle on the slushy roads and crossed the centerline into the path of a southbound white 2003 Chevy Avalanche. The Chevy was driven by Tabatha Burch, age 29 from Midland.
Kristen Laughton was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Tabatha Burch had a minor injury and was treated at the scene. Her three passengers were not injured in the crash.
Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash and air bags deployed in both vehicles.
While there is no evidence to indicate that alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in this crash, we are waiting for toxicology reports for a final determination. This report will be forwarded to the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office for review once it has been completed.
The Midland County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Lee Township Fire Rescue, Mid Michigan EMS and Chief Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Dennis Wagner.
