MEDIA RELEASE - August 14, 2017

The Midland County Sheriff's Office is investigating a two vehicle, head on fatal traffic crash that claimed the life of an 18 year old Gladwin woman. The incident took place on eastbound US 10 West of Stark Road in Lincoln Township at approximately 11:16 PM on August 11, 2017.

At 11:14 PM , Midland County Central Dispatch received a call reporting a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lane of US 10 near Eastman Road. Two minutes later the head on crash was reported.

Our investigation indicates that the driver, Janice Rozek, age 67 from Auburn, was driving her red 2006 Chevy Equinox, westbound in the eastbound lane of US 10. She then struck a black 2000 Lincoln Town Car that was being driven by Kristina Garafalo, age 18 from Gladwin. Her vehicle was heading eastbound on US 10.

A short time later there was a second crash at the scene. Ms. Garafalo's vehicle had come to rest sideways in the roadway after the first crash. A silver 2005 Pontiac G6 driven by Brett Bohn, age 18 from Sanford, came upon the scene but was unable to stop in time and struck the rear passenger corner of the black 2000 Lincoln Town Car.

All the drivers appeared to be wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crashes.

Ms. Garafalo was pronounced deceased at the scene. Mrs. Rozek was transported to MMMC with critical injuries. Mr. Bohn and his two passengers were not injured in the secondary crash.

While there is no evidence to indicate that alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in these crashes, we are awaiting for toxicology reports for a final determination. This report will be forwarded to the Midland County Prosecutor's Office for review once it has been completed.

The Midland County Sheriff's Office were assisted at the scene by Midland City Police, Lincoln Township Fire Rescue, Jerome Township Fire Rescue and Mid Michigan EMS.
